Richmond Activist Targets Procter & Gamble's Chinese-Only Ads For Crest Toothpaste

April 23, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Social activist Kerry Starchuk renewed her campaign for a ban on Chinese-only signage in Richmond, British Columbia, following the appearance of Procter & Gamble’s bus stop advertisements for its Crest toothpaste brand. Starchuk claimed allowing advertisements and signage in languages other than English and French poses a threat to the things that unite all Canadians. Procter & Gamble, for its part, justified its use of Chinese-only signage as a means of addressing a specific group of consumers in the country. Richmond’s city council had earlier voted against a proposed ban on advertisements and signage that use a foreign language only.

Gay Rights Activists Call On Procter & Gamble To Stop Advertising On Russian TV Network

August 15, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Gay rights advocates called on Procter & Gamble to pull out its advertising from Russian TV network Rossiya1 after newscaster Dmitry Kiselev said gays should be banned from donating blood and sperm. P&G is the TV network’s biggest advertisers and, hence, is one of the LGBT community’s most important incidental targets as they campaign against Russia’s anti-gay laws. Today, consumers think large companies owe them their support in fighting social issues, such as gay rights. Consumers are empowered by the Internet, which informs them about whatever a brand does even in the farthest markets. P&G faces a dilemma: heeding the LGBT community’s call is likely to make it run afoul of Russian authorities; however, deciding otherwise could bring about gay activists calling for a boycott of P&G products in countries with strong LGBT presence.

Multinational Companies Should Take Advantage Of A Hidden Asset: Multicultural Managers

August 1, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Multicultural managers – often unseen and unrecognized in multinational companies – have a lot to contribute to the success of global innovation projects, according to a case study published in the Harvard Business Review. L’Oreal’s multicultural minds were able to be creative, to share complex knowledge across locations, contexts and cultures and to manage global innovation and product development teams effectively, according to the author. Multicultural managers in integrative roles made a positive difference in the innovative process at the brand. According to a L’Oreal executive, “Multiculturals have a kind of gymnastic intellectual training to think as if they were French, American, or Chinese and all together inside them.”

Avon Wants More Men As Sales Representatives In UK

May 26, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Avon is recruiting more men as sales consultants in the UK. Men seem to be good in selling cosmetics and other Avon products, with Fife-based Avon sales leader Tracey Eydmann saying it is maybe because men have an idea of what women want. Avon sales representatives receive a 25 percent share on sales higher than £150 per month, and the company also offers incentives and bonuses for sales leaders managing other representatives and recruits. Avon reported sales decreased to £313 million in 2011 from £329 in 2010; however, the company said pre-tax profits rose from £4 million to £25.5 million during the same period. Avon's male representatives are part of a trend in the UK where more people are choosing self-employment with multi-level marketing companies, which contributed £1.5 billion to the UK economy in 2012, according to the Direct Selling Association.

More Women In China Rise Up Corporate Ladder, Still Face Discrimination, Survey Shows

April 30, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
In China, 30 percent of women are occupying senior management positions within companies, according to a survey by Starcom MediaVest Group. Many women, however, are not fairly compensated for their contribution, with their salaries about two-thirds of the salaries of their male counterparts. Results of the survey also found that although many respondents view men as equals, almost 88 percent of women said marriage and having babies make them less equal and limit their career opportunities in the corporate world. Modernization has transformed marriage and motherhood from a vocation into an obligation that limits women's chances for personal fulfillment, according to Starcom MediaVest national research and insights director for Greater China Jeffrey Tan. This perhaps led more than 90 percent of women to agree that marrying the right man, defined as a man with large enough bank balance, is important.
